How to Add Texture to Text on Canva

Texture refers to any pattern on text that adds some character to your design. It not only adds uniqueness to your text but also grabs the viewer’s attention.

In this tutorial, you will learn how to transform plain text into something that looks similar to the image below:

Adding texture to text on a computer

Select a Font

1. Go to the Canva website and sign in to your account.
2. Open a design template from the home page to craft your own design on Canva. We have used the Instagram post size in this tutorial.

   

3. From the toolbar on the left-hand side, select Text to add any font to the canvas. Next, type anything on the canvas (I wrote ‘Texture’ in this tutorial), and align it as you prefer.

   

4. At this point, you may also want to adjust the color of your background and text using the color picker.

   

Choose a Texture from Elements

Before proceeding to this step, make sure that your font size and placement are exactly how you want them in the finished design. Although this isn’t mandatory and can be adjusted later, it is preferred to reduce those adjustments.

1. From the Menu bar on the left-hand side of the screen, click on Elements and type “Textures” in the search bar. Here, you can find various texture patterns, some of which are editable.

   

2. Now, pick a texture that you like best – it will appear at the back of the text on your design.

   

3. Hover your cursor to the top-right corner of the screen and select Position to open a pop-up box. You can toggle between positioning the texture backward to forward from this box. Select “Forward” to place the pattern on top of the text.

   

Adjust the Background and Text Color if Required

1. The next step is to ensure that your background color is the same as the color of the pattern you have chosen to add texture to text and vice versa. Changing the pattern’s color to blend with the background will help the text stand out and create a well-blended, visually appealing design. In our case, as we’re using a white background, we will also make the texture white.

   

2. Once you have changed the pattern’s color, drag and adjust it over the text at different angles until you successfully create a texture that you’re happy with. You can also duplicate the pattern to create a denser texture.

   

   

Adding texture to text using an iPhone or Android

In this section, I’ll teach you how to use the Canva iOS or Android app to create a textured text design that looks like this:

Create a New Design

1. Log into your Canva account and open a new design canvas. I have used the Facebook post size in this tutorial.

   

2. Tap on the “+” sign at the bottom-left corner of your screen and select Text. Here, choose a font you prefer and type a title (‘Texture’ in this tutorial). Now, align the text however you wish on the design page before proceeding.

   

   

Choose the Font and Background color

1. Once your text is set on the canvas, you can move on to changing the color of the font by tapping the color picker from the toolbar at the bottom of your screen.

   

2. Next, choose a background color or design. For this, tap on the background and pick the color of your choice. In this tutorial, I chose the color orange to add some contrast.

   
3. If you wish to choose a custom shade, tap on the “+” sign beside the color suggestions and use the color wheel to select your preferred shade.

Choose a Texture from Elements

1. Now that your font size, colors, and placement are exactly how you want them in the finished design, tap “+” on the bottom-left corner of the screen and select Elements.
2. In the search bar, type “textures”.

   

3. Keep scrolling till you find a pattern that you like and select it. The texture will appear on top of the design.

   

Adjust the Color and Alignment of Texture on Text 

1. From the toolbar at the bottom of your screen, change the pattern’s color to match your background. This will cause the pattern to blend with the design.

   
2. Once done, hold and drag the pattern on your screen over the text to adjust it to your preference. Your design is now ready to be shared!
