Note: Currently, the drawing tool is only available when you use Canva on a computer.

How to draw in Canva using the drawing tool

1. Open Canva and open a new (or existing) design. For example, I have selected a blank Instagram post (Portrait) design.

   

2. Once your canvas is open, you will find several editing options in the side panel. Select More.

   

3. Scroll down the list of apps and select Draw (Beta). Search for it if you can’t find it in the list – it has a pencil icon.

   

4. Pick a brush that you want to use for freehand drawing. You can select any of the four options – Pen, Marker, Glow Pen, and Highlighter.

   

5. Next, select a color for your brush by clicking the colored square you wish to choose. You can also set a custom color by pressing the + icon. To select a color from your design, tap the pen icon. You can also enter a color’s Hex Code.

   

6. If you wish to erase any part of your drawing, click on the Eraser tool and drag it over the lines you want to erase.

   

7. You can also pick a brush and alter its size or transparency if you want to draw more. To do this, toggle left or right the Size or Transparency sliders.

   

8. Click on Done when finished with your drawing. This will save your freehand drawing as an image in Canva.

Some points to note:

• Your Canva Pro subscription will be disabled at the end of the billing period for the current month.
• Once the subscription ends, you will only lose access to the pro features. You can still enjoy the free version of the app.
• All your designs will remain accessible when you revert to the free version of Canva (they won’t be deleted).

Cancel Canva subscription on computer

1. Sign into your account on the Canva Website.

   

2. On the top-right of the homepage, click on Settings. Alternatively, click on your profile icon and select Account settings from the drop-down menu.

   

3. From the side panel, scroll down and click on Billing & plans.

   

4. Then, scroll down to find the subscriptions panel. Click on the three dots next to Change plan and select Cancel subscription.

   

5. You will be directed to another pop-up window where you must confirm whether you want to Keep Canva Pro or Continue cancellation. Click on Continue cancellation.

   

6. Finally, choose your reason to cancel your Canva Subscription, then select Continue cancellation. Your Canva subscription will now be canceled.

Cancel Canva subscription on Android or iPhone

1. Launch the Canva app. On the bottom-right, tap Menu.

   

2. Scroll down and select Settings.

   

3. Tap on the Subscription tab to proceed to cancellation.

   

4. Under Canva for Teams, tap Manage.

   

5. You will be taken to a screen showing payments & subscriptions. Tap on Manage subscription to proceed.

   

6. On the next screen, select Cancel subscription.

   

7. Finally, select one of the options under ‘What’s making you cancel.’ Tap Continue to confirm you want to cancel your Canva subscription.

   

   Canva will not end your subscription unless you select the reason for your cancellation. At this point, you may decide to go Back and keep enjoying your Canva Pro features.

However, certain aspects of designing in Canva, such as sizing and margins, must be kept in mind if you wish to print your design. Follow these instructions to learn how to print from Canva.

How to Print from Canva on Computer

1. Log in to your Canva account.
2. Open the design you want to print or create a new one. In this tutorial, I have used an existing design.

   

3. Click on File and select Show margins to make sure none of the visuals are cropped out from your design when printing.
4. From the same menu, select Show print bleed to enable broken lines to appear near the edges of your Canva design. This ensures no inaccuracies in the print by extending the background beyond the dashed line.

   

5. Hover over to the top-right corner of your screen and click Share.

   

6. Select Download.

   

7. Next, select PDF Print by expanding the drop-down menu under “File type”. This will ensure the best quality for your printed design.

   

8. Also, tick the Crop marks and bleed checkbox to prevent leaving out any design elements in the print.

   

9. Click on Download to download your design before printing.

   

10. The project will be saved to your computer’s downloads folder by default. Locate and open it.
11. To print your design, click the Print icon on the PDF viewer window or use the keyboard shortcut (Ctrl + P for Windows or Command + P for Mac).

    

How to Print from Canva on iPhone or Android

1. Launch the Canva app.
2. Select the design you want to print.

   

3. Once the design is open, tap on the three dots at the top panel of your Canva home screen. Here, select Show margins and Show print bleed to ensure all visuals are in the safety zone of the print area.

   

4. On the top-right, tap the share icon.

   

5. Next, hit Download.

   

6. Tapping on Download will let you choose the file type you want to download your design. Choose PDF Print from the pop-up menu, as it’s the option that retains the highest image quality.

   

7. Check the box next to Crop marks and bleed to avoid cutting off any important parts of the design. Finally, click on Download.

   

8. Go to your phone gallery and open your downloaded design. On the bottom-left, tap the Share icon.

   

9. On the menu that appears next, scroll down to find and select Print.

   

10. In the “Prints Options” section, select the printer you want to use to print your design, the number of copies you want, and the paper size.

    

11. Tap on Print to print your design.

What to know before deleting your Canva account

• Cancel any subscription plans if you are a Canva Pro user to avoid charges even after your Canva account is deleted.
• Your Canva account can be recovered for 14 days after following one of the methods below. To recover it, log back into your account.
• After deleting your account, your designs, folders, uploads, and teams will be permanently deleted along with your Canva account. After 14 days have passed, these will not be recoverable.

Delete Your Canva Account on a Computer

1. Sign in to your account.

   

2. On the top-right corner, click on your profile icon.

   

3. Select Account settings from the menu.

   

4. Next, select Login & security on the left panel.

   

5. Scroll down and click the last option that prompts you to Delete account.

   

6. A pop-up screen will ask you to confirm that you want to delete your account. Type in the word DELETE in the text box as prompted.

   

7. Finally, click on Delete account to confirm.

Delete Your Canva Account on iPhone or Android

1. Launch the Canva app.
2. On the bottom-right, tap on Menu.

   

3. From the menu, select Settings.

   

4. Next, tap on Login & security.

   

5. Choose the Delete account option.

   

6. You will see a pop-up screen with instructions to type the word DELETE. Type them in – this will confirm you intend to delete your account.

   

7. Finally, select Delete account.

How to remove background in Canva on a computer

1. Log into your Canva account
2. On the home screen, select a template. For this example, I have chosen the Youtube Thumbnail template.

   

3. Insert the picture you want to remove the background from. You can either use Upload media from the left menu or search Canva’s available images by tapping on Photos.

   

4. To remove the image’s background, tap on the image and select Edit image from the top toolbar. Then, select BG Remover in the left action panel.

   
5. Select Erase while making sure that the photo is selected. You will see the background removed from the image in a few seconds.

   

6. Now, you can drag your image to the position you want.

   

How to remove background in Canva on iPhone or Android

Removing backgrounds from photos has become much easier with the Canva app! You no longer need to use complex graphic design tools or a computer to remove the image background professionally. Just follow these steps, and you can create something like this:

1. Launch the Canva app.

   

2. Open the template that you wish to create. I’m using the Poster template.
3. Next, tap on Create blank template when prompted.

   

4. Tap on the purple + icon on the bottom-left of your screen and select Photos.

   

5. In the Photos search bar, type the picture you want to add to your design from Canva’s image library. You can also upload your own images by selecting Uploads from the menu bar instead.

   

6. Tap your image to select it, then choose Effects from the bottom toolbar.

   

7. Select BG Remover. In a few seconds, the image’s background “magically” disappears!

   

   You can now edit the image further by dragging it to position, changing the color, and inserting elements like shapes and text.

   Note: if the background of your chosen image is complicated and you do not achieve the results you were looking for using the remove background feature in Canva, you can always make further adjustments by hitting the Restore and Erase option.

Add a Text Box in Canva on a Computer

1. Click on the design template you wish to create or open an existing design to add text to.

   

2. Once your design is opened, on the side panel, click on Text.

   

3. To add text to the blank template, click on Add a heading. You may also click Add a subheading or Add a little body of text or even choose from the featured “Font combinations” under instead.

   

4. After adding the text box, you can edit the font style and size. You may also want to add Elements to make your design more attractive.

   

Add a Text Box in Canva on iPhone or Android

1. Launch Canva on your device.
2. If you already have a design saved, locate and open it from the Recent designs. You can also start a design from scratch or use one of the templates.

   

3. Tap on the + sign on the bottom-left corner of your screen.

   

4. Tap on the Text icon on the menu bar at the bottom.

   

5. Select Add a heading to add a text box to your design. You can also choose Add a subheading or Add a little body of text, which will have pre-set designs. You can find more template designs for your text box by scrolling down.

   

6. Once you have added the text box, you can use the editing toolbar to change the text’s font, size, color, and style.

   

Curve text in Canva on computer

1. Open Canva in your web browser, and sign in to your account.
2. From the home screen, select the template you wish to use. I selected Facebook post for this example. You can also choose to edit one of your existing designs.

   

3. Click on Text in the left menu bar and customize the text block that appears. In this example, I typed “How to Curve Text”.

   

4. Select the text you want to curve and click on Effects on the top toolbar. This will open a pop-up effects menu with different styles and shapes that you can apply to your selected text.Here, go to the “Shape” section and select Curve. This instantly applies a semi-circle curve effect to your text.

   

5. You can use the Curve slider at the bottom of the left panel to adjust the curvature. Moving the slider to the right will make it more circular, while sliding it to the left will turn the curve downwards. You can manually enter a curve value into the box next to the curve slider.

   

How to curve text in Canva on iPhone or Android

If you’re trying to curve text on the Canva app, there are a few extra considerations to remember. In this section, I’ll show you how to use the Canva app to create the design below.

1. Launch the Canva app on your phone.

   

2. Tap on a recent design or a blank template to create a customized design. For this example, I’ve chosen an Instagram post template.
3. On the bottom-left corner, you’ll find a purple plus icon. Tap on it to add text to your design.

   

4. Tap on Add a heading to type custom text to which you can apply the curve effect.I have created a title for this design reading “How to curve text”. You can also create multiple text blocks by tapping on the plus icon to add new text.

   

5. Next, select the text you wish to curve and click Effects in the bottom toolbar.

   

6. From here, you can tap on Shape, which will show two options: None (to maintain the current shape of the selected text) and Curve (the option that you need to choose to curve the text).

   

7. Tapping on Curve will automatically alter the plain text into a semi-circle format. To adjust the curvature of the text, drag the slider on the adjustment panel until you get the curvature you want.

   

How to group elements in Canva on a laptop/PC

1. Open the Canva website and sign in to your account.
2. Select a design that you wish to work on.

   

3. Select each of the elements that you wish to group. To do this, hover your cursor over an element and click to select it. Then, press and hold the Shift key on your keyboard and click on the other elements, one at a time. You will notice a selection border appearing on the elements you tap on.

   

4. To ungroup the elements, click anywhere on the design except the selected elements.

   

5. To permanently group the elements, first select the elements. On the top toolbar, tap on Group to lock the elements together as a group. The selection will be illustrated through a rectangular or square box around the elements.

   

6. You can now move, copy, resize, duplicate or delete the entire group as if they were one object.
7. To ungroup the elements, click on the group and select the Ungroup option from the top toolbar. This will ungroup the elements, allowing you to edit them individually.

How to group elements in Canva on iOS and Android

1. Launch the Canva app and tap on the design you wish to work on.

   

2. Tap on any one of the elements in the design that you wish to select. Then, slide the bottom toolbar to the right until you locate the More option. A three dots icon indicates this option.

   

3. Tap on More and choose Select Multiple from the pop-up menu. Now, you will be able to select multiple elements in the design.

   

4. Once you have selected your elements, tap anywhere on your mobile screen to close the pop-up menu. The bottom toolbar will appear once again in its place.
5. From here, tap on Group in the bottom toolbar. A rectangular box will appear as a border around the selected elements. This will enable you to perform actions on all these elements together as a group.

   

6. To ungroup the elements, select the group and tap Ungroup on the bottom toolbar.

Adding texture to text on a computer

Select a Font

1. Go to the Canva website and sign in to your account.
2. Open a design template from the home page to craft your own design on Canva. We have used the Instagram post size in this tutorial.

   

3. From the toolbar on the left-hand side, select Text to add any font to the canvas. Next, type anything on the canvas (I wrote ‘Texture’ in this tutorial), and align it as you prefer.

   

4. At this point, you may also want to adjust the color of your background and text using the color picker.

   

Choose a Texture from Elements

Before proceeding to this step, make sure that your font size and placement are exactly how you want them in the finished design. Although this isn’t mandatory and can be adjusted later, it is preferred to reduce those adjustments.

1. From the Menu bar on the left-hand side of the screen, click on Elements and type “Textures” in the search bar. Here, you can find various texture patterns, some of which are editable.

   

2. Now, pick a texture that you like best – it will appear at the back of the text on your design.

   

3. Hover your cursor to the top-right corner of the screen and select Position to open a pop-up box. You can toggle between positioning the texture backward to forward from this box. Select “Forward” to place the pattern on top of the text.

   

Adjust the Background and Text Color if Required

1. The next step is to ensure that your background color is the same as the color of the pattern you have chosen to add texture to text and vice versa. Changing the pattern’s color to blend with the background will help the text stand out and create a well-blended, visually appealing design. In our case, as we’re using a white background, we will also make the texture white.

   

2. Once you have changed the pattern’s color, drag and adjust it over the text at different angles until you successfully create a texture that you’re happy with. You can also duplicate the pattern to create a denser texture.

   

   

Adding texture to text using an iPhone or Android

In this section, I’ll teach you how to use the Canva iOS or Android app to create a textured text design that looks like this:

Create a New Design

1. Log into your Canva account and open a new design canvas. I have used the Facebook post size in this tutorial.

   

2. Tap on the “+” sign at the bottom-left corner of your screen and select Text. Here, choose a font you prefer and type a title (‘Texture’ in this tutorial). Now, align the text however you wish on the design page before proceeding.

   

   

Choose the Font and Background color

1. Once your text is set on the canvas, you can move on to changing the color of the font by tapping the color picker from the toolbar at the bottom of your screen.

   

2. Next, choose a background color or design. For this, tap on the background and pick the color of your choice. In this tutorial, I chose the color orange to add some contrast.

   
3. If you wish to choose a custom shade, tap on the “+” sign beside the color suggestions and use the color wheel to select your preferred shade.

Choose a Texture from Elements

1. Now that your font size, colors, and placement are exactly how you want them in the finished design, tap “+” on the bottom-left corner of the screen and select Elements.
2. In the search bar, type “textures”.

   

3. Keep scrolling till you find a pattern that you like and select it. The texture will appear on top of the design.

   

Adjust the Color and Alignment of Texture on Text 

1. From the toolbar at the bottom of your screen, change the pattern’s color to match your background. This will cause the pattern to blend with the design.

   
2. Once done, hold and drag the pattern on your screen over the text to adjust it to your preference. Your design is now ready to be shared!

   

Important: The feature for uploading fonts is available for Canva Pro users only.

Uploading a font to Canva on a computer

Step 1: Open Brand Kit in Canva

1. Log into your account on Canva.com
2. On the home page, click on the three dashes to open the menu. Click on “Brand Kit” in the left action menu in Canva.

   

Step 2: Uploading the Font File

1. After selecting Brand Kit, click on Upload a font. This button is usually found next to the “Brand fonts” section.
   
2. A new window will open where you can select the font file to upload. If you haven’t downloaded your desired font files yet, you’ll have to do that first through a site like Google fonts. Canva supports popular formats such as OTF, TTF, and WOFF.
3. Select the font you want to add. We added the font DancingScript-Bold for this guide. Then, click on Open (or double-click the font file) to upload the font to Canva.Note: You have the option to upload up to twenty fonts simultaneously.

   

4. After uploading the font file, you will see a license/ownership confirmation window that confirms that you own the font being uploaded or that you have the license to use it. Select Yes, upload away!

   

5. Now, wait for a few seconds while the upload completes. It will appear in the Uploaded fonts section once completed.
   Note: You can upload up to 100 fonts in Canva.If the Upload process fails, you’ll receive a pop-up message. This usually happens when:
   • the font is not licensed
   • the file is corrupt
   • the file format is not supported

   If that happens, you’ll have to solve your issue and try re-uploading the font file. Sometimes, simply re-uploading the font file also solves the problem.

Step 3: Using the Font

To use the uploaded font:

1. Open a new design.
2. Select Text from the left sidebar.
3. Use the search bar to locate your uploaded font.

   

How to delete the font

1. To locate an uploaded font, select “Brand Kit” from the left sidebar and find the font under the Uploaded fonts section.
2. You can delete the font by clicking on the trash icon to the right of the uploaded font.

   

Uploading a font to Canva on iPhone or Android

Step 1: Open Brand Kit

1. Log in to your Canva Premium account and select the Menu icon at the bottom right of your screen.

   

2. In the Menu that shows, select Brand Kit.

   

Step 2: Uploading the font

1. Scroll down to Brand fonts and select Upload a font in the Brand Kit section. Then, tap on it to begin the upload process.

   

2. Your phone will open your downloads folder on your device. If you can’t find your font file there, navigate to the folder where you have it downloaded. Select the font file to upload it. In our example, we’re uploading the font Montserrat.
   Note: If the font is downloaded in a .zip format, make sure you unzip it first to be able to upload it.

   

1. After selecting your font file, a dialogue box will display, asking you to confirm you have the right to use the font. Tap on Yes, upload away!
   

   

2. This will start the upload process. Wait for the font to finish uploading – it will usually take less than ten seconds. The uploaded font will now appear under Brand fonts in the Uploaded fonts section.

How to delete the font

You can delete a custom font using the Canva app in two simple steps.

1. Go back to Uploaded fonts in the Brand kit. There, look for the font you want to delete.
2. Tap the Bin icon in front of the font to delete it.
